The fact that beyerdynamic gives its new flagship of the „PRO“ headphones the number 1770 is a clear statement: They do not want to define less than the new studio standard.

[...]

The DT 1770 PRO is what I like to call a cuddly headphone. You put it on and want to sink down in a cuddly sofa. There is no need to discuss room for the ears, headband pressure or adjustment range of the headband, everything is simply perfect.

The large beyerdynamic studio headphone is powerful on the ears – in the positive sense. It is straight forward, presents the music very directly and gives me inevitably a wide grin in the face – which does not disappear even in longer listening sessions. For all this impetuosity it plays incredibly controlled and precise. It works out every detail and thus qualifies as a monitoring headphone of first quality. Particularly remarkable is the bass range, which is often quite powerful and punchy with closed designs. But with the DT 1770 PRO it goes down deeply and despite its energy it proves to be quite suitable for long-term listening.

"These circumaural headphones are meant for the professional engineer or musician seeking a clear representation of the entire frequency range, from the very deepest bass to the brightest highs."

[...]

"The DT 1770 Pro can reproduce intense sub-bass, but it does so accurately, not by exaggerating what's in the mix. More of a personal tool of preference and less something you'd buy in bulk to outfit a live tracking room, the DT 1770 Pro is nevertheless an excellent reference pair, earning it our Editors' Choice award."

[...]

"The earcups and pads block out a fair amount of ambient noise and also don't leak out much audio, making them ideal for studio use."

[...]

"Like all excellent studio headphones, the DT 1770 Pro walks the fine line between pure flat response and slight boosting in certain frequency ranges to allow for clarity, richness, and depth. On tracks with powerful sub-bass, like The Knife's "Silent Shout," you will hear it. This track, played through an Apogee Symphony, sounded amazing—clean highs balanced with full-bodied, deep bass. Somehow, the bass sounds huge without feeling boosted—once the vocals come in, the focus is very clearly on the mids and high-mids. In other words, the DT 1770 Pro does its job—if you have gobs of sub-bass in your mix, you will hear it, but not at the expense of the rest of the frequency range...unless, of course, that's how your mix is balanced in the first place."

Beyerdynamic’s second largest model comes without any gadgetry, but as a timeless beauty. With the DT 1770 PRO the comfort for wearing was a declared development objective: its velvet pads are very comfortable around the ears. Despite a comparatively high input resistance it also considerably loud with portable devices. Its outstanding sound comes into full effect mainly with full or headphone amplifiers at home, where it features a fine dynamic and a sonorous midrange presence, which gives instruments and voices a fine brilliance. The most balanced sound artist of its class!

The DT 1770 PRO fits comfortably and secure and is suitable for longer sessions. When there is music, ambient noise and outside world are almost entirely suppressed. At the same time even with higher levels nothing penetrates to the outside. The sound of the DT 1770 PRO is brilliant in the highs and rich in the bass. Therefore, the headphones can be fun sometimes. The DT 1770 PRO shows its strengths as a reference headphone. Due to the neutral, uncompromising sound, errors in the recording, mix or master are recognised immediately. The transients are flogging, the panorama view is detailed and exact, the whole sound is rich in attacks, extremely direct and clear. In short: the DT 1770 PRO has the potential to become a legend.

The DT 1770 PRO proved to be of a top quality when assessing out latest test recordings and the listening test sessions with our reliable sound material. It features a clear, transparent sound with a smooth signal reproduction and a lot of details. Its dynamic reproduction and its impulse behaviour are excellent, the spatial imaging is precise and differentiated. The highs are meticulous and analytical tuned, the bass sounds are dry, tight and comparatively reserved. The frequency spectrum is very large, even the deepest and highest frequencies are reproduced fine and detailed. The imaging properties are sharp and distinct making it easy to reveal individual signals to the ears. The locating is successful in the width and in the spatial depth. When detecting noise of any kind, the DT 1770 proves to be a meticulous tracking dog and acoustic magnifying glass. The overall assessment of ready mixes and longer listening sessions with the DT 1770 Pro are also easy and relaxed.  The high comfort of wearing and experienced ease contributes to the fact that listening sessions are comfortable and efficient without any heat congestion. The headphone handmade in Germany justifies its price at first sight with an intransigence in workmanship, quality and material.

[...]

Can even the demanding occasional listener at home or even the tempted high end user profit from the gifts of the beyerdynamic headphone?  First of all it is more than that.  Those who fear that it is  a too clinical and sterile sound loupe, will be astounded with the first listening sessions.

[...]

In addition to a high comfort of wearing there is also a carefully balanced pressure around the ear as soon as the headphone is put on. There is no pressure or unnatural feeling – quite the contrary. After a short time the heavy weight of 388 grams of this kind of headphone is already forgotten. If you take it off for a moment, your eyes are caught by the rugged spring steel headband, which is softly padded and bordered by high-quality leatherette.

[...]

On the whole the workmanship is excellent and gives the future owner the good feeling that he/she has a headphone that appears to be indestructible.

Jazz
With Herbie Hancock‘s  „Chameleon“ (Head Hunters) the DT 1770 PRO served with a relaxed sovereignty a deep, extremely vivid, spatial reproduction of the individual instruments. It reproduced the groove and drive of the play with a bouncy style of playing and a high fun factor. At the same time a high level of detail, transparency and colourising effects in the midrange passages with a captivating consistency of honour. From the 7th minute the drumming by Harvey Mason resulted in pure enthusiasm when it started to an infernal crescendo.  The beyerdynamic headphone intoned the impact within with a precise contouring and a lively, smooth play which gave a feeling that the fells and percussions did not only vibrate and swing, but trembled for mercy.

Electro
In “Before” by Scuba (triangulation) the DT 1770 PRO was dedicated to electronic sounds. It revealed its open, neutral basic nature with gripping clarity. Voices sounded very natural, not artificial or of a basic warmth that can be ignored.
The low-ranging, strong and posh bass was a real pleasure, as the whole play was of a lively transparency and perfect agility. Here the headphone from Heilbronn was not stingy with reserves regarding dynamics and level (...). "

Classic
What an opulence and brilliance of colour with classic pieces such as the "Diplom - Folk Suite for Fiddle and String Orchestra - Abelvær" by Trondheimsolistene (In Folk Style) in 24 bit / 96 kHz at highresaudio.com. The beyerdynamic headphone followed every such so small movement and nuance with meticulous stringency. It did not acquire its airy play with acrimony or aggressiveness. No, no with all transparency it always sounded authentic and open.  The DT 1770 PRO intoned the play as a synthesis of the arts, full of dynamic and as quick as lightning. The homogeneity and quality in the reproduction, the beyerdynamic DT 1770 PRO did not leave anything unrevealed. Sonic events which occurred either left, right or at the top or bottom could be recognised easily. Just the ability to reproduce the sound multidimensionally structured and give the music the required room with authority and gentle hands, make the DT 1770 PRO enormously soft and sound incredibly spatial. (...)."

With the beyerdynamic DT 1770 PRO the headphone specialists from Heilbronn succeed in creating another future legend in addition to the DT 770 PRO milestone. Determined by the excellent quality, the rugged versatility and the reference sound. Whether for professionals in the studio or enjoyable high end users: the beyerdynamic moves with remarkable ease through all genres and terrains with a broadband, diverse and lively musicality. The transparent, airy and impressing colourful basic character makes it a precise headphone for monitoring and high end. Those who thought that the DT 1770 PRO only dedicates to individual total segments and would ignore the musical general overview should listen with the beyerdynamic headphone in a relaxed atmosphere. The enthusiasm, the impressive timing and the monitoring depth should put even the most critical high end user in a good mood.

With the DT 1770 PRO beyerdynamic definitely did not only succeed in placing another big hit, but in creating a new icon.

Thick ear and headband pads, height adjustment integrated in the headband: the beyerdynamic DT 1770 is the most comfortable of our four candidates. The large round pads enclose the ear completely and therefore it is quite comfortable despite the strong pressure. An advantage of this tight fit is that it has an excellent ambient noise attenuation. The special rugged cable is connected to the headphone via a mini XLR connector.

[...]

With its 2.0 transducers the DT 1770 plays beautifully loud with current iPods, despite the 250-ohm moving coil. The bass sounds clean without any inclination of a rumbling sound, vocals are as convincing as instruments. Piano recordings really sound thrilling, the minimal nasal colouring can be ignored. Spatial imaging and pulse cleanliness – clearly visible in the reproduction of the finest vocal characteristics – set the standards in this price class.

When placing the headphones on the head there are no problems. The yokes firmly lock in place and the headphones do not slip when moving the head. When connected to a headphone amplifier, the DT 1770 Pro is extremely agile and with an informative wealth that normally is an exception in this price class. It succeeds in dynamic shades, the vivid transparency sets standards and the bass sound is neutral. For example Nils Lofgrens >>Keith Don't Go<< benefits from this enormously, his perfect guitar play becomes a great headphone event. Even the softest string sounds become audible and to this a maximum of speed is added. The DT 1770 Pro needs no acoustic exaggerations for its performance, which is proved by the fact, that I still enjoy listening with it even after one and a half hours. No question:  The DT 1770 Pro does not only belong into studios, but also into living rooms of demanding listeners.

All in all, the manufacturer has created a fine bundle, which is reasonably priced regarding quality, extent and impression.

[...]

Immediately there is a familiar sound – similar to its small brother a comparatively sound rich in bass and treble is provided. The perceivable deep bass even starts a bit further down and is generally similar strong, but is controlled „tidy“. That is in itself a fine base. A certain range in the mids, especially where there are vocals, has become more present. Voices, but also many instruments are coming to the foreground (where they normally should be) without drifting into intrusiveness. This is a very welcome step into the right direction, because in a direct comparison these classic headphones sound a bit too distant.  The highs are fine, but reveal a lot of small details and thankfully do not tend to exaggerations of the sibilants. The treble range is still stronger than the mid range which can lead to mixes that sound slightly attenuated when using neutral sounding players.

[...]

For a closed headphone the spatial sound is remarkably differentiated. Individual sound events can be clearly heard separately. The bass performance and the panorama of the virtual stage are clearly heard. Hall rooms can be very well evaluated with this new model. The 770 model could convince already, but now the manufacturer improved it further. The impulse fidelity is really exemplarily with percussion sounds fading away in time. This is reflected in tight, crispy and clearly outlined kick drums. The high dynamic i.e. the strong contrast between a whisper and a loud outburst results in a more dramatic course of the music piece. Very nice.

[...]

Conclusion: First of all it has to be noted that these headphones are excellently suitable for almost all tasks in the studio – on the one hand it attenuates the environment very well (practical for monitoring when recording), on the other hand it sounds very detailed, quite balanced and differentiated (good enough to judge a mixing). Compared to the smaller model the progress in sound is more than clear. The spatial picture and dynamic range were optimised, and the more present mids are a mercy. But still the sound is very enjoyable, because the bass is very strong and “sparkling“. Apart from the sound the beyerdynamic DT 1770 PRO shows that its comfort when wearing on the head and its workmanship is excellent. This applies mainly to the classic headphones, but now there are also two detachable long perfectly manufactured cables (straight and coiled) with mini XLR connectors for a quick replacement included. Great. The supplied accessories complement the headphones: two cables, two screwable 1/4” adapters (6.35 mm) and two pairs of ear pads of different kinds and a fine case. What else do you want?

[...]

Altogether the beyerdynamic DT 1770 PRO achieves a very good rating in the test report of delamar.  Those who are looking for a closed studio headphone of a high quality should take a look at this model.

Rating: 4.5 (of 5) / very good

The circumaural ear cups with replaceable leatherette and velour pads are comfortable even over extended periods of time despite the doubled headband pressure of 7 Newton. According to the price the workmanship is of a high quality and solid.

[...]

The balanced frequency response is similar to the DT 770 but the DT 1770, which is also closed, reproduces individual instruments more precisely from the deep bass to transparent highs. Things that were not heard with the old (but not bad) DT models, is now clearly presented. Compressors and reverb parameters can be set more precisely when mixing.

The DT 1770 PRO makes a rugged and solid impression.

[...]

With a weight of 388 gram (without connected cable) it is not one of the lightest headphones, but even though it is not uncomfortable to wear. One important issue: For beyerdynamic headphones you can get spare parts, even after centuries!

[...]

The appearance of the DT 1770 PRO is a noble one. All parts are in matt black which reminds me initially of matt black luxury cars competing with the Batmobile on the road for some time. (...) the DT 1770 PRO makes this design look valuable and precious. The adjustable headband, the yokes and cables appear expensive, but are reduced to a minimum emphasising the simple elegance.

[...]

Due to extra clear highs the DT 1770 PRO sounds surprisingly open. It is louder than my other headphones and is remarkably deep and with many highs, a beautiful sound! The spatial reproduction and the clean stereo image does not leave you time to think about the advantages or disadvantages of closed headphones. After the first few jumps between my favourite titles I am in a certain madness of collecting audio impressions and can hardly wait to listen to many other titles, as I have the impression that I now hear for the first time how these titles really sound.

[...]

For me the frequency response provides a powerful bass, relatively low mids and remarkable highs.  It reminds me a little bit of the volume button on stereo systems. The middle nose typical in many other closed headphones which mostly sounds like unpleasant cabinet resonance is not heard. The middle frequency range from 300 Hz to 1 kHz could be 1 to 2 dB louder in my opinion, but everything else that is heard makes me doubt my previous headphones.  A rich, not slurred bass and crispy precise highs, as I have rarely heard so far. This is what makes listening fun!

[...]

Impulse behaviour: The rim clicks of my reference piece “The Hounds of Winter” by Sting sound as pointedly as they were probably intended by Vinni Colaiuta. A dream! Normally I know such clean sounding transients from pure acoustic live music only or from Manger loudspeakers. The DT 1770 Pro succeeds in this precision due to beyerdynamic’s latest Tesla 2.0 moving coil technology, indeed the whole range of all music titles I listen to.
(...) Regarding stereo image and bass differentiation the DT 1770 Pro meets all desires. I cannot hear any imbalance and would grant this headphone only a very low in-head localization. Compared to the closed AKG K270 I cannot hear an exaggerated wide stereo image. The K270 almost sounds opposite phase compared to the DT 1770, signals that wander in the panorama, are almost indefinably heard with the K270, while the 1770 reproduces almost everything precisely.

[...]

The DT 1770 Pro opens sonic worlds, which are unrivalled among closed headphones. Precise and fine sounding, loud and yet free from distortion, comfortable and processed of a high quality, the DT 1770 Pro will soon advance to the preferred headphone in recording studios and live application. It can handle unbelievable high levels and remains without distortion even with loud volumes. Due to the closed design it features an excellent ambient noise attenuation and provides almost a kind of measuring device for the ears due to the audio precision, if there were not the relatively reluctant mids.  You can appreciate the sound properties of the beyerdynamic DT 1770 Pro when you listen with it for a while. Its strong bass lets you know when it is too much. The clear and emphasised highs make you feel what happens in the upper frequency range and the under-represented mids might lead to warm mixes. What else could you ask for?

Pros
High-impedance and nevertheless loud
Most precise high frequency response and impulse behaviour
Strong bass response
Clear spatial reproduction
No disturbing mid response despite closed design
All parts replaceable

Cons
Somewhat weakly remarkable mids

Regarding the beyerdynamic DT 1770 Pro, Tesla 2.0 describes the magnetic field strength, which is used to drive the diaphragm coil. In this way the headphone has enough headroom to transform even dynamic passages easily.

[...]

The workmanship of the beyerdynamic DT 1770 Pro leaves nothing to desire. Due to its ruggedness the headphone has been definitely designed for live and studio applications. Its headband made of spring steel gives the headphone a high-quality impression and also an enormous stability.

[...]

Featuring a weight of 388 grams the beyerdynamic DT 1770 Pro is still light enough to be worn over an extended period of time. We found that it has a perfect fit. The relatively high headband pressure ensures clear ambient noise attenuation, which is very effective in combination with the closed design.

[...]

Compared to its predecessor the sound of the new version is much better.

[...]

When playing rock music the new headphone is very powerful. It sounds more direct than the DT 770 Pro and presents singing voices much better. Bass guitars do sound much deeper now and are not as superficial as before. Guitars sound fairly crunchy both, when listening to the music or when making music oneself. The beyerdynamic DT 1770 Pro, however, still maintains the focus on details.

[...]

Even with serious music we could give our impression when listening. While its predecessor handled orchestra music quite cautiously, the beyerdynamic DT 1770 Pro made use of the whole headroom. Abrupt instruments such as big timbals were presented with a lot of power and emphasis. The headphone reproduced very good dynamic improvements. Discreet instruments were presented with a special clarity. This made the whole performance worthwhile.

We investigated the neutrality of the headphone by playing pieces with an acoustic guitar and flamenco dancer. The guitar strings sounded sparkling and appear right before our inner eyes. We could very well comprehend the fingers running over the fingerboard. Due to the extended deep frequency response the steps of the accompanying dancer stood out clearly. With her circular dance movements she entered the acoustical room very deep. In this way the beyerdynamic DT 1770 Pro can be recommended as an excellent working tool for assessing echo chambers.

[...]

Whether for home cinema or recording studio, both want the same thing: experience the best possible sound. With the beyerdynamic DT 1770 Pro you receive a very vibrant and powerful headphone that surpasses its predecessor in all matters.
